Bridges of Sparta

Description

Sparta is home to many unique bridges, some of them covered bridges. These special bridges were built by hand by “The Five Shovelmen” who volunteered to build these bridges to beautify the community. Take a stroll on the self-guided bridge tour:

Bridge #1: Beaver Creek Covered Bridge

This bridge was built by volunteers, many of them of high school age or younger. It was the first covered bridge to be built in downtown Sparta, and has made a large impact to beautify the area. Built in 2009. The project was the first improvement in the area, which is now a beautiful plaza area complete with a farmers market.

Once US Silica is done mining the bridge will serve the City of Sparta as a gateway to the new recreational area including Smith Lake, beach, boat launch and rustic camping sites.  The bridge was funded by US Silica and a DNR Stewardship grant that the Parks and Recreation Department applied for and received. Built- in 2016.
